A large element of the 6th grade Dalet class is their Hesed project, which encourages our students to participate in social action projects for the purpose of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). The projects might involve raising money for a charity walk, making sandwiches to donate to a soup kitchen, or creating a “birthday in a box” with all the elements that a needy family will need to celebrate a child’s birthday.
For our spring collection, we are helping homeless children feel special on their birthdays with the help of an organization called “Birthday Wishes of Long Island.” We are collecting brand new birthday party supplies and will be creating birthday boxes where each birthday child will receive a birthday in a box. In the box will be everything needed for that child’s party – plates, napkins, juice boxes, cake mix, frosting, candles and a birthday present. All items should be brand new and follow a theme, like Super heroes or Disney princesses. Watch video from the class explaining the Hesed project. Click here for list of items to be donated. Thanksgiving collection –
In the fall of 2021, the Dalet students partnered with the Harry Chapin Food Bank at Long Island Cares to help feed the needy. They spent an evening at Shop Rite soliciting donations and then spent the next few classes sorting and organizing them into bags. The students ended up with 5 carts of groceries, which translated into 80 Thanksgiving dinners for hungry families !
In the spring of 2021, the Dalet students created a script and made a commercial to appeal to the greater synagogue community (watch here), asking for personal-sized toiletries for the homeless.
